Apple picking season is here! I’m so excited! I know I said that apple picking isn’t apple picking unless it’s cold enough outside to have to wear a sweatshirt….but I couldn’t wait! My husband and I took our soon out over Labor Day weekend and we had a blast. It wasn’t sweatshirt weather but it was a comfortable 70 degree day and I was happy.
We had so much fun picking all the apples and my little guy had a blast. He’s been apple picking once before but he wasn’t even six months old so he doesn’t remember and we weren’t able to go last year. It was definitely a new experience for him this year! The orchard we went to had four varieties that were ready to be picked but we stuck with the gala and macintosh apples. Nothing beats a fresh apple that you pick from the tree yourself!
Sometimes the apples in the grocery stores really aren’t that good, or they look and feel really good and you take a bite and end up throwing the apple away because it wasn’t so nice on the inside. Nothing is worse than a bad apple! That NEVER happens with an apple direct from the orchard! They are always so crisp and crunchy and I love it! They seem to last forever too, which is just fine by me because I LOVE an apple right off the tree.
My little guy loved running up to my husband saying “daddy, daddy, me high,” he really liked to pick the apples that were on the really high branches. Those are the moments that just put a smile on my face and mommy was ready with her camera, like she always is. I was able to capture some really adorable pictures. My favorite one might have to be a picture of my son feeding my husband an apple. Super adorable!
After our apple picking trip we of course have a ton of apples that we need to do something with. The first thing I made was apple butter. Have you ever made apple butter in a slow cooker before? Oh my goodness does it make your house smell absolutely wonderful! Apples, brown sugar and cinnamon cooking away for eight hours do wonderful things together.
Slow cooker apple butter couldn’t be any simpler. All you need to do is toss some apples, brown sugar, cinnamon and a little salt into a slow cooker, let it cook away for about eight hours and when the time is up let it cool just a bit and puree it smooth. It’s as simple as that and it is just a wonderful addition to breakfast.
I like to spread mine on a piece of toast, just plain and simple. It’s also great with pancakes and waffles, it makes a great dip for french toast sticks. Why not cut up a fresh apple or pear and dip those right in the apple butter?! How about a piece of toast spread with some apple butter and covered in slices of banana? Even better, use it as a topping for ice cream!
I really enjoy this particular recipe for apple butter. It’s not too sweet. I would rather let the sweetness from the apples shine through than load up my apple butter with sugar. If you like yours a little more sweet you can absolutely add more brown sugar. After you make this recipe once or twice you’ll figure out what you like and you can adjust the ingredients to your liking.
Try out this recipe and let me know how you like to eat your apple butter. This recipe makes about four cups and will last up to three weeks tightly covered in the refrigerator.
Take your family on an apple picking adventure and bake up something delicious!
- 12 cups apples - peeled, cored and thinly sliced
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp. salt
- Place all ingredients into a slow cooker
- Turn slow cooker to low and set for 8 hours.
- Stir mixture every two hours.
- When done, remove the lid of your sloe cooker and let the mixture cool for 30 minutes to an hour.
- Using a food processor, blender or immersion blender, puree the apple mixture until smooth. Be very careful pureeing the mixture, it will still be hot. It's better to puree in batches.
- Any variety of apples will do. I used a mixture of gala and macintosh apples.
- This recipes makes about four cups of apple butter.
- This will last tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to three weeks.
